CHAPTER 8

FOOD

“To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise

we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”

~Buddha

Food is awesome. Food is fuel. Food is love. But food can also be dangerous. As we age, we all need to look at food as longevity. Eating well can give us vital nutrients and extend our lives. Eating low quality food or eating too much food can shorten our lives.

I am not a doctor or a nutritionist. But at this point in my life it is incredibly important for me, and others my age, to really pay attention to what we eat. When you’re young you can get away with eating too much and eating the wrong foods. But these bad habits can now have a real effect on our health and on our ability to fight disease. So, I share with you the best information I can find and I encourage you to learn everything you can about food and how it can keep you healthy. Do your own research project. Talk to your doctor and your friends. Be conscious about what you eat and learn more about what it can mean to your health.

Let’s take a moment to look closer at obesity in our country. According to the CDC, 42% of adults in the U.S. are obese. (“Adult Obesity Facts”) What exactly is the problem with being overweight? Does it really hurt you?

According to the CDC, people who are obese, compared to those with a healthy weight, are at increased risk for many serious diseases and health conditions, including the following:

High blood pressure (hypertension)

High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia)

Type 2 diabetes

Coronary heart disease

Stroke

Gallbladder disease

Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint)

Sleep apnea and breathing problems

Many types of cancer

Low quality of life

Mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders

Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning
